I was suspended because of my support for UEC – Annuar Musa

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 13: Umno Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa claimed that his suspension as Mara chairman in January was due to his support for the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

“Many within the party are extremely uncomfortable with my support for the recognition of the UEC, as well as my views on certain issues, including allowing UEC graduates to enter Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL),” Annuar was quoted as saying by Sin Chew Daily.

Annuar claimed that he was made a sacrificial pawn in internal party politics and that he was “pulled down” so that he would not have a strong standing in politics.

“This is a fight within the party. Ten days before I was suspended, I got a threat in a WhatsApp group, saying that I would be probed,’ he claimed.

Annuar also alleged that his involvement in Pelaburan Mara Bhd or UniKL’s sponsorship of Kelantan’s football team The Red Warriors was not the main cause for his suspension.

“Ever since I gave a statement saying that UniKL recognises the UEC, I have received many nasty messages. I do not want to say who sent them but these nasty messages have created a mess.

“Some feel that I am trying to override their authority,” he said.

Last month, Annuar clarified that the UEC is recognised by UniKL as an entry qualification to its university.

Although UniKL is under MARA, he said it is a private higher learning institution which has received approval from the Higher Education Ministry to accept applications from UEC holders.

“Many overlooked this and thought UniKL is a public university because it is under Mara, when in fact it is a private institution of higher learning.

“I have checked UniKL policies and indeed we are allowed to accept graduates of UEC and other international certification such as O-Level,” he had reportedly said.
