THE Eatery at Four Points By Sheraton Penang has created a feast fit for a Malaysian folklore warrior with its Santapan Pahlawan buffet.
Available from 7pm to 10.30pm every Saturday, the spread relives the times of seafarer Nakhoda Ragam, famed for his sea exploits around the Malay Archipelago.
It is believed that he was the first to give Penang its name. As there was no higher or larger isolated island in his travels, he named it Pulau ke Satu, directly translated as Single Island.
With more than 20 items, the buffet comprises a salad bar, soup of the day, sumptuous main dishes, a selection of grilled meat and seafood, and tantalising desserts.
Specially created by award-winning executive chef Nor Ismail Mat Esa, the rustic and hearty dishes are rich in spices and fragrance to revive jaded palates.
Appetisers include ayam daun pandan (chicken wrapped with pandan leaf) and tauhu sumbat berurai (stuffed silken bean curd with vegetables), while soup is soto ayam berempah (spicy chicken soup).
The salad bar tempts with kerabu sotong limau bali, nasi kerabu, masala potato salad, banana blossom salad, and seafood kerabu mussel salad with roast coconut, to name a few.
Highlights for the mains consist of rendang daging Pahlawan Temasik (braised beef fillet in brown coconut sauce), betis kambing Laksamana Kencana (lamb osso bucco in coriander candlenut paste) and gulai ikan Selat Melaka (coral sea bass curry).
To further whet appetites are raja udang sambal kemangi (stir-fried prawn with tomato chilli confit and hoary basil), ayam bunga kiantan (braised chicken with lemongrass, turmeric, coconut and wild ginger flower) and sayur campur Pulau Mutiara (wok-fried mixed vegetables with Indian mustard seed).
At the live grill station, tickle taste buds with rusuk kambing rempah ratus (lamb), ayam dara kampung pinang sebatang (chicken), ketam bunga Pulau Cendana (flower crab), udang harimau Pahlawan Berantai (tiger prawn), puyuh rimba Seri Meranti (quail) and satay ayam/daging Wak Ketari.
Desserts comprise an assorted Malay cookies, lempok pandan, durian creme brûlée, banana pudding, ondeh-ondeh, kuih lapis, cinnamon layer cake, bubur pulut hitam and banana fritters with rainforest honey.
The buffet is priced at RM70 nett per adult and RM40 nett per child (aged six to 12 years old) and senior citizen (aged above 60 years). Pay an additional RM28 nett for free flow of soft drinks/ beer or RM38 nett for house wine. Starwood Preferred Guest members get to enjoy 20% off the food bill.
The Eatery, with its al fresco patio overlooking the sea, sets the perfect ambience to dine with family and friends. Thus, the Flavours of the Orient Sunday Buffet Lunch is another must-try.
