Teenager’s alleged reckless driving leads to three deaths

PONTIAN: A 17-year old boy’s alleged reckless driving has led to three deaths in a three-vehicle accident at 9.3km, Jalan Simpang Rengam heading to Benut, near Rengit on Monday.

Pontian district police chief, Superintendent Zakaria Abd Rahman, said initial police investigations revealed that the boy who did not have a valid driving licence was speeding about 8.50pm when he lost control and rammed into two vehicles on the opposite side of the lane.

The vehicle driven by the boy was said to have plunged into a drain at the roadside after ramming into both cars.

The impact of the accident led to the death of the teenager and his passenger, a 16 year-old boy as well as a 28-year old driver who was pinned in his seat.

The driver of the third vehicle escaped unhurt.

Pontian Fire and Rescue department firemen helped to extricate the bodies from the cars.

Zakaria said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless and dangerous driving.
